An Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (ALIF) is a surgical procedure performed on the lower portion of the spine. During the procedure, the surgeon approaches the spine from the front (anterior) and removes a damaged or diseased disc. A bone graft is then inserted into the space left by the removed disc. Over time, the bone graft fuses with the adjacent vertebral bodies, stabilizing the spine and reducing pain.
