Two claws face each other on a serrated post. Turning a large thumb screw (the 'paw' mechanism) draws the claws together, and an automatic ratchet holds them. Dull, non-glare stainless steel.
Primary uses
What this instrument is on the table to do.
Closing a thoracotomy: the jaws are hooked around the ribs above and below the incision and tightened to bring the ribs together. The pericostal sutures are tied while it holds the ribs, then it is removed. On adult and pediatric thoracotomy trays (lung, PDA, coarctation, flank approaches).
