Balloon Dissector
Also called Dissecting balloon, Dissection balloon, Preperitoneal distention balloon
A clear PVC balloon mounted on a trocar sleeve with a blunt obturator. It is filled with sterile saline, or with air through a filling channel using a sterile hand pump. Balloons are shaped as ovals, cylinders or oblongs depending on their purpose.
Primary uses
What this instrument is on the table to do.
Separates tissue planes outside the peritoneum to make a working space, such as the retroperitoneum for retroperitoneal robotic nephrectomy or the preperitoneal space for TEP hernia repair. Once the space is made, the obturator comes out and a telescope goes in; the balloon is then removed and replaced with a port or blunt trocar.
