Conical Extraction Bolt

Also called Conical extraction screw, Extraction screw, Extraction bolt

Official 1 photo

Hardened extraction screw with a conical, left-handed (reverse) thread at the tip. It fits on a T-handle (or handle/cross-handle); AO's broken-screw set has two sizes.

Primary uses

What this instrument is on the table to do.

Hardware removal. For a screw with a stripped recess it is pressed into the recess and turned counterclockwise until the conical thread bites and the screw backs out. For a broken screw shaft, after a countersink and hollow reamer have freed the shaft, the right-size extraction bolt is turned counterclockwise onto it to pull it out. Also used when a shallow shaft cannot be gripped with pliers.

Sizes & variants

The lengths, angles and patterns it comes in.

AO set: two sizes on a T-handle. DePuy Synthes OPERACE extraction screws: 1.6, 2.0, 2.6 and 3.5 mm, matched to the screw recess size (Table 2), used on a handle or cross-handle; sterile, single-use, stainless steel with a silicon carbide coating.
