Cylindrical Annulus Sizer
Also called Cylindrical sizer
- Type
- Specialty
Valve sizer with a smooth cylinder of a set diameter on a handle or stem, supplied in graded sizes in the heart-valve maker's sizer set. Some are double-ended, with the cylinder at one end and a flanged replica of the valve cuff at the other.
Primary uses
What this instrument is on the table to do.
Measures the aortic annulus. The right size passes through the annulus without resistance. In the David (valve-sparing reimplantation) procedure a cylindrical sizer confirms the annular diameter while the graft size is chosen. For stentless valves both the annulus and the sinotubular junction should be measured.
Sizes & variants
The lengths, angles and patterns it comes in.
Artivion On-X: cylindrical aortic sizers 19, 21, 23 and 25 mm; conical for 27/29 and 31/33 mm; bendable stem at each end. Abbott Masters 905-15: double-ended, cylindrical annulus end and flanged cuff-replica end. A Hegar dilator may be used instead for some valves.
