Drill Bit
Also called Drill bit set, Drill box
Cutting bit that fits a power or hand drill and bores holes in bone. Bits come in a case (drill box) in graded sizes.
Primary uses
What this instrument is on the table to do.
Drills holes in bone, usually before a screw is placed. In hip hemiarthroplasty the drill bits (including 1/4 in and 1/2 in) are set up with the high-speed drill. In total elbow arthroplasty, crossed (cruciate) and transverse holes are drilled in the proximal ulna (olecranon) so heavy #5 nonabsorbable sutures can reattach the triceps; the sutures are tied with the elbow flexed 90 degrees.
Sizes & variants
The lengths, angles and patterns it comes in.
Drill bit sets run 1.6 to 4.7 mm. Hip hemiarthroplasty sets include 1/4 in and 1/2 in among others.
