What it does and the lengths it comes in.

  • What it’s for

Life support for adults, children and newborns with heart or lung failure that does not respond to other treatment. It takes over the work of the heart and lungs for days to weeks to give organs time to recover. Venovenous (VV) ECMO supports the lungs only; venoarterial (VA) ECMO supports the heart and lungs. After heart surgery it can support a patient who cannot be weaned from cardiopulmonarykar-dee-oh-PUL-muh-nair-eeRelating to the heart and lungs together.cardi/o heartpulmon/o lung-ary relating toFull entry bypass, which is why some heart setups ask for ECMO to be available.
