Watching the vocal folds while the patient speaks during medialization laryngoplasty (thyroplasty) under local anesthesia: the anesthesia provider passes it through the nose so the surgeon can judge the medialization and choose the implant size as trial pieces are tested. Also used to view the vocal cords in the office, and may be kept ready to check the cords in recovery after neck surgery.
