HeartMate 3 Coring Tool
- System
- Pro
A circular blade on a plastic handle, with a grey line on the handle for counting turns. Inside the blade is a helix that holds the cored tissue, with a guide pin at its center. The helix sits on a spring-loaded center rod held by locking tabs; pinching the tabs pulls the helix back to the blade.
Primary uses
What this instrument is on the table to do.
Cores the left ventricle for the HeartMate 3 inflow cannula, in place of the coring knife from the implant kit. Steps are turn-pinch-turn: the guide pin goes into the center of the apical cuff, aimed at the mitral valve; three clockwise turns set the helix; pinching the tabs pulls tissue to the blade; clockwise turning cores until the white line on the green center rod shows. The tool is then pulled out with the core. Works sew-then-core or core-then-sew. Afterward the tabs are relocked and the core is unwound from the helix with tissue forceps, turning counter-clockwise.
