A long, thin, flexible quartz glass fiber in a colored jacket. One end has a metal connector that plugs into the laser console; the other end is a polished bare tip.
On the table
What it does, the lengths it comes in and what experienced techs know about it.
What it’s for
Carries the holmium laser energy from the console down the working channel of the ureteroscope or nephroscope to the stone. Fibers are usually left unopened until the surgeon decides to laser.
Lengths and variants
Core sizes run from about 100 to 500 microns. About 200 microns is common in flexible ureteroscopes and 365 microns in mini-PCNL; larger fibers are used with semirigid scopes. The pictured Boston Scientific Flexiva fibers are single-use (200 and 365 shown).
