Kyphon Inflatable Bone Tamp
Also called Inflatable Bone Tamp, Ibt, KyphX Xpander Inflatable Bone Tamp, Balloon tamp, Balloon catheter
A balloon catheter for kyphoplasty. The shaft has two separate lumens: the outer one inflates the balloon near the tip, the central one holds a removable stiffening stylet. A side-arm adapter has an inflation port and a stylet port; a color band shows size, an exit marker band and radiopaque markers help placement, and an insertion sleeve comes on it.
Primary uses
What this instrument is on the table to do.
Placed deflated through the cannula and positioned by its radiopaque markers, inflated to 44 psi (3 atm) to hold its place, then inflated with contrast under imaging to lift the fractured endplate and pack cancellous bone into a cavity. It is fully deflated and removed so the cavity can be filled with cement. Two balloons may be used at once when more force is needed.
