A hand instrument with a thin, flat blade on a solid handle, used to peel tissue off bone. Blades vary: straight or curved, square or rounded, sharp or blunt. The one shown has a straight, flat blade.
Primary uses
What this instrument is on the table to do.
Strips the periosteum (the tough membrane on bone) from the bone surface so bone can be cut or sawed cleanly; periosteum tends to shred if a rongeur or saw meets it first.

Many patterns and widths. Common ones are the smooth-tip Joker and the larger square-tip Key elevator; Key elevators run about 6.4-25.4 mm wide and 7-8 3/8 in long.
