Rigid Sigmoidoscope
Also called Strauss sigmoidoscope
A straight open tube (circumferential speculum) with a metal obturator, used with a fiber-optic light. The standard steel scope is 25 cm long; the eyepiece (window) at the back usually carries the light and air-pump connections.
Primary uses
What this instrument is on the table to do.
Views the rectum and sigmoid colon to find lesions and take biopsies, and can be used to deflate a sigmoid volvulus. In low anterior resection and other colon surgery it is used to test the anastomosis: air is blown in through the rigid sigmoidoscope while the pelvis is filled with fluid and the surgeon looks for bubbles.
Sizes & variants
The lengths, angles and patterns it comes in.
Standard steel: 25 cm x 19 mm. Disposable plastic: 25 cm x 18 mm, usually preferred over steel, and used with a reusable illuminator head. Other diameters (11, 15, 27 mm) may be requested. A 25-cm scope with a 15-mm lumen is also made. A 330-mm Strauss sigmoidoscope with Luer fitting and bellows is also made.
