A plain urinary catheter with a straight, rounded tip, one or two drainage eyes near the tip, and a funnel end. It has no balloon.   • What it’s for

    Empties the bladder once, when continuous drainage is not needed: to drain the bladder before surgery or to get a urine specimen. It is then removed. A Robinson catheter is also used for other jobs, such as irrigating a duct, or passed through the nose to pull the uvula forward during a tonsillectomy.

  • Lengths and variants

    French sizes from about 5 Fr for infants up to 30 Fr; male (longer) and female (shorter) lengths. A Coude catheter has a stiff curved tip and is a separate type.
