Tube Stockinette

Stockinette · Tubular stockinette · Cotton stockinette · Impervious stockinette

A soft knitted cotton tube that comes rolled flat, like a long sleeve with no ends. It is cut to length and stretches to fit an arm, leg or foot. A sterile impervious version with a plastic layer is also used for draping.

On the table

What it does and what experienced techs know about it.

  • What it’s for

Used to drape an arm or leg for extremity surgery such as foot and ankle cases. After the prep, the foot is grasped in the stockinette, which is unrolled up the leg, often doubled; a folded towel is wrapped around its top and fastened. Later it is cut with bandage scissors to expose the incision site. Non-sterile stockinette is also used to cover a child's head or limbs for warmth.
