Femoral Arterial Thromboembolectomy

The common femoral artery is opened in the groin and a balloon catheter is pulled through it to remove the clot blocking blood flow to the leg.

The case

A femoral thromboembolectomy removes a clot that has suddenly blocked the femoral artery. Most often the clot (embolus) breaks off inside the heart, for example in a patient with atrial fibrillation or after a heart attack, and lodges where the artery divides in the groin. The leg becomes painful, numb, pale and pulseless, so the case is usually urgent. The surgeon opens the common femoral artery and draws the clot out with a balloon-tipped (Fogarty) catheter to restore flow to the leg. The approach is a short vertical groin incision. Because many of these patients are very sick, the surgery is often done under local anesthesia with a limited incision when possible, although general anesthesia may be used. Clot-dissolving drugs given through a catheter and catheter-based suction devices are alternatives, but open surgery remains the standard. If the catheter passes do not restore good flow, the surgeon may go on to a bypass. The same open technique with a Fogarty catheter was once used for clots in the deep veins, but that is now rarely done. The main risks are bleeding, damage or spasm of the artery, and clot that is left behind. Heparinized saline, several catheter sizes, two working suctions and a loaded sponge stick should be ready before the incision, and the team should be prepared for an angiogram on the table.

Before you ask

The honest answers.

What is CSTSetup?

A study site and apps for surgical techs and students, made by surgical techs. It has the real back table for 259 procedures, 2,882 instruments with photos, and practice for the CST, TS-C, CRCST, CSPDT and CSFA. Programs use it to teach and students use it to study. You can start free, and Pro opens all of it.

Can I cancel?

Any time, from your dashboard, and you keep Pro until the period you already paid for runs out. No email, no phone call, no retention script.

Does it work on my phone?

One account covers the website and the apps. Study on the bus, review on the unit, and your progress is the same everywhere. It lives on the account, not the device.

I haven't set an exam date yet.

You don't need one. Without a date the daily lesson is 10 questions built from what you are weakest on. Set a date later and it grows on its own as the date gets closer.

What happens to my progress if I stop paying?

Nothing is deleted. Your streak, your history and everything you have mastered are still there if you come back, and the free tier keeps working.

Is this enough on its own?

For the setups and instruments, yes: 259 trays and 2,882 instruments, tested until you are quick with them. For the exam it is practice, written to the exam's official outline, with full timed exams. It does not replace your program's textbook.
