Open Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair

The weakened, ballooned section of the abdominal aorta is opened and replaced from the inside with a tube or bifurcated synthetic graft, sewn to healthy aorta above and to the aorta or iliac arteries below, restoring normal blood flow and removing the risk of rupture.

The case

An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a bulge in the wall of the aorta below the kidneys, where the wall has stretched and weakened. Most are found before they cause symptoms, often on imaging done for something else. The danger is rupture, which causes massive internal bleeding and is often fatal, so a large or growing aneurysm is repaired on purpose before that happens. Today many AAAs are repaired from inside the artery with a stent graft (endovascular repair, EVAR). The open repair is used when the anatomy is not right for a stent graft, when an endovascular repair has failed, and sometimes for a rupture. Through a long midline incision, the aorta is clamped above and below the aneurysm, the aneurysm is opened, and a synthetic graft (Dacron or PTFE) is sewn inside it: a straight tube graft when the aneurysm ends above the aortic bifurcation, or a bifurcated (Y) graft when the iliac arteries are involved. The old aneurysm wall is then closed over the graft to protect it. This is a long, high-blood-loss case on a heparinized patient with the aorta clamped, so preparation and speed matter: blood should be available before the incision, the circulator times the clamps, and the scrub needs every suture loaded before the aorta is clamped.

Before you ask

The honest answers.

What is CSTSetup?

A study site and apps for surgical techs and students, made by surgical techs. It has the real back table for 259 procedures, 2,882 instruments with photos, and practice for the CST, TS-C, CRCST, CSPDT and CSFA. Programs use it to teach and students use it to study. You can start free, and Pro opens all of it.

Can I cancel?

Any time, from your dashboard, and you keep Pro until the period you already paid for runs out. No email, no phone call, no retention script.

Does it work on my phone?

One account covers the website and the apps. Study on the bus, review on the unit, and your progress is the same everywhere. It lives on the account, not the device.

I haven't set an exam date yet.

You don't need one. Without a date the daily lesson is 10 questions built from what you are weakest on. Set a date later and it grows on its own as the date gets closer.

What happens to my progress if I stop paying?

Nothing is deleted. Your streak, your history and everything you have mastered are still there if you come back, and the free tier keeps working.

Is this enough on its own?

For the setups and instruments, yes: 259 trays and 2,882 instruments, tested until you are quick with them. For the exam it is practice, written to the exam's official outline, with full timed exams. It does not replace your program's textbook.
