Total Abdominal Hysterectomy (TAH)

The whole uterus, including the cervix, is removed through an incision in the lower abdomen by clamping, cutting and tying its ligaments and blood vessels on both sides and then closing the top of the vagina.

The case

A total abdominal hysterectomy (TAH) removes the entire uterus, both the body and the cervix, through an open abdominal incision. The word "total" separates it from a supracervical (subtotal) hysterectomy, where the cervix is left in place, and "abdominal" separates it from the vaginal, laparoscopic and robotic routes. TAH is done for fibroids, abnormal bleeding, endometriosis, adenomyosis, pelvic infection, chronic pelvic pain, prolapse and gynecologic cancers. It is often combined with removal of both tubes and ovaries (TAH-BSO), and repairs for vaginal prolapse can be done at the same time. Minimally invasive routes are preferred when they are possible, so today the open operation is used mainly for a very large uterus, heavy scarring or adhesions in the pelvis, complex disease or suspected cancer that needs wide access. The incision is usually a low transverse Pfannenstiel. A vertical midline or paramedian incision is used when more room is needed or the upper abdomen must be explored. For the scrub, a TAH has a steady rhythm: clamp, clamp, cut and tie, repeated on each side, using heavy hysterectomy clamps (Heaney, Heaney-Ballantine, Ochsner) and stick ties on a Heaney needle holder. When the vagina is opened, the case becomes clean-contaminated. Instruments that touch the cervix or vagina are kept apart, and three closing counts are done: at the vaginal cuff, the peritoneum and the skin. The main risks are bleeding, injury to the ureters, bladder or bowel, infection and blood clots.

Before you ask

The honest answers.

What is CSTSetup?

A study site and apps for surgical techs and students, made by surgical techs. It has the real back table for 259 procedures, 2,882 instruments with photos, and practice for the CST, TS-C, CRCST, CSPDT and CSFA. Programs use it to teach and students use it to study. You can start free, and Pro opens all of it.

Can I cancel?

Any time, from your dashboard, and you keep Pro until the period you already paid for runs out. No email, no phone call, no retention script.

Does it work on my phone?

One account covers the website and the apps. Study on the bus, review on the unit, and your progress is the same everywhere. It lives on the account, not the device.

I haven't set an exam date yet.

You don't need one. Without a date the daily lesson is 10 questions built from what you are weakest on. Set a date later and it grows on its own as the date gets closer.

What happens to my progress if I stop paying?

Nothing is deleted. Your streak, your history and everything you have mastered are still there if you come back, and the free tier keeps working.

Is this enough on its own?

For the setups and instruments, yes: 259 trays and 2,882 instruments, tested until you are quick with them. For the exam it is practice, written to the exam's official outline, with full timed exams. It does not replace your program's textbook.
