Carbide Ball Burr

Also called Ball burr

Official 1 photo

Round-tipped, fluted tungsten-carbide cutting burr that fits a high-speed power drill. A 3.0 mm size is used for screw removal.

Primary uses

What this instrument is on the table to do.

Removing a plate held by a locking screw with a stripped or damaged head. The burr grinds away every surface of the screw head that touches the plate until the plate is free; the plate is then levered off with an osteotome, and the remaining screw shaft is turned out with locking pliers or a T-handle (or cut free with a trephine if too short).

Sizes & variants

The lengths, angles and patterns it comes in.

3.0 mm ball, fluted carbide (the article used a Midas Rex Legend ball-fluted carbide burr on a standard orthopedic power unit).
