A hand-cranked skull drill: a stabilizing handle at the top, a crank handle that turns in a circle, and a chuck (thumb-screw or snap lock) that holds interchangeable perforator and burr bits. About 9 1/2 to 9 3/4 in.

Making burr holes in the skull by hand. AST: burr holes are occasionally drilled with a Hudson brace and D'Errico bit instead of a power perforator, for craniotomy and for the burr hole of a ventricular shunt.
