Intervertebral Disc Shaver
Also called Disc shaver, Shaver
Spine instrument passed into the disc space. Shavers break up the nucleus pulposus so it can be removed and scrape cartilage off the vertebral endplates. Rotary shavers are turned inside the disc space.
Primary uses
What this instrument is on the table to do.
Discectomy before an interbody fusion. In lateral lumbar interbody fusion, after the box annulotomy and pituitary rongeur work, shavers, curettes, rasps and rotary shavers clear the disc under fluoroscopy; rasps and rakes then finish the endplates. Also used in posterior and transforaminal interbody fusion.
