A heavy, long, double-action rib rongeur with straight jaws and a square bite. Its working end goes around the rib, and squeezing the handles slides a blade out to cut it.

Resects ribs in thoracic surgery, such as a thoracotomy. The thoracic tray carries one Sauerbruch double-action rongeur, 10 1/2 in.
