Heavy double-action bone rongeur with broad, angled 'duckbill' jaws, about 9 in long, with a bite about 5 to 6 mm wide.

Biting and smoothing bone. In a rib resection (thoracotomy or the flank approach for open nephrectomy) the rib is cut with rib shears and any rough edges are smoothed with a rongeur. A duckbill rongeur is on the thoracic instrument list.
