What it means
Removal of the uterus through an open incision, either across the lower belly (bikini cut) or up and down. It is chosen for a large uterus, large fibroids, cancer or when other surgery is needed. The cervix, ovaries and tubes may be removed too. Other routes are vaginal and laparoscopic (or robotic) hysterectomy.
For the nurse
After surgery, check vaginal bleeding, the incision, pain and urine output (the bladder is close by), and help the client walk early to prevent clots. Teach no heavy lifting and no sex for about 6 weeks, or as the surgeon directs.
