ad lib

As much or as often as the client wants; written in orders, from the Latin ad libitum.

ad LIB adjective

What it means

An instruction that leaves the amount or timing to the client. "Activity ad lib" means the client may move about as they wish, and "fluids ad lib" means they may drink as much as they like. It is the opposite of a set limit, such as bed rest or a fluid restriction.

For the nurse

Check that "ad lib" fits the client's safety needs; a client at risk of falls may still need help to walk.
