antioxidant

A substance that protects cells from damage caused by unstable molecules called free radicals.

Word parts

What it means

Free radicals form during normal body chemistry and from smoke, pollution and radiation, and they can damage cells. Antioxidants neutralize them. The body makes some itself; others come from food, such as vitamins C and E, beta-carotene and selenium, found in fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains. Large-dose antioxidant supplements have not been shown to prevent disease, and some can be harmful.
