Word parts
What it means
Near-total absence of urine output. It can come from the kidneys stopping work (as in severe acute kidney injury or end-stage kidney disease), from very low blood flow to the kidneys (as in shock), or from a complete block of urine flow. Less severe low output is oliguria.
For the nurse
First check that the catheter is not kinked or blocked and that the bladder is not full, then report it at once. Track intake and output closely; potassium and fluid can build up quickly.
