What it means
Very common, and usually from strained muscles or ligaments, disc problems, arthritis or posture. Back pain together with fever, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin, new leg weakness, a major injury or a history of cancer needs urgent care. In late pregnancy, low back pain that comes and goes can be a sign of labor.
For the nurse
Ask where it is, how it started and whether any of the urgent signs are present. Teach safe lifting: bend the knees, keep the load close and do not twist.
