What it means
A word used in the names of drug groups. Beta blockers (such as metoprolol) block adrenaline's effect on the heart, slowing the heart rate and lowering blood pressure. Calcium channel blockers (such as amlodipine) relax blood vessels. Angiotensin receptor blockers (such as losartan) lower blood pressure. H2 blockers (such as famotidine) reduce stomach acid. Neuromuscular blockers paralyze muscles during surgery.
For the nurse
Check the heart rate and blood pressure before giving beta blockers and calcium channel blockers, and hold the dose and call the provider if they are below the ordered limits.
