blood alcohol level

A test of how much alcohol is in the blood, given as a percentage or in mg/dL.

BLUD AL-kuh-hol LEV-ul noun

What it means

Also called blood alcohol concentration (BAC). It is checked after injuries, in unexplained confusion or coma, and in poisoning. In most US states the legal limit for driving is 0.08% (80 mg/dL). Higher levels slow breathing and thinking more and more, and very high levels can cause coma and death. People who drink heavily over time may seem less affected at a given level.

For the nurse

Interpret the level together with the client's behavior and breathing. A falling level with ongoing confusion needs another cause looked for, such as a head injury or low blood glucose. Watch heavy drinkers for alcohol withdrawal as the level falls.
