calcium carbonate

A calcium salt taken by mouth as an antacid for heartburn and as a calcium supplement.

KAL-see-um KAR-buh-nate noun

What it means

It neutralizes stomach acid for quick heartburn relief, and it is one of the most common forms of calcium supplement for bone health. In kidney failure it is also used to bind phosphate in food. Constipation and gas are common. Taking too much, especially with milk, can raise the blood calcium.

For the nurse

As a supplement, it is absorbed best with food. It binds some drugs, such as iron, levothyroxine and some antibiotics, so give those at a different time. Teach the client not to exceed the label dose.
