clamp

A device that squeezes something shut, such as a tube or blood vessel, to stop flow.

klamp noun

What it means

IV tubing, catheters and chest tubes have clamps that stop flow; surgical clamps grip tissue or blood vessels; and an umbilical cord clamp closes the cord after birth.

For the nurse

Know when clamps should be open or closed. Do not clamp a chest tube unless ordered or the policy allows, and check that IV clamps are open when an infusion starts.
