What it means
Cold narrows the blood vessels, which slows bleeding and swelling and numbs pain. Cold compresses or ice packs are used in the first day or two after a sprain, bruise or surgery, and on the perineum after childbirth. They are usually left on for about 15 to 20 minutes at a time.
For the nurse
Always put a cloth between the cold pack and the skin, and check the skin often for numbness, pale or blotchy color, or pain. Use extra care in clients who cannot feel or report cold well, such as those with diabetes, poor circulation or confusion.
