Word parts
What it means
A procedure in which the scope is passed through the anus to look at the whole colon. Polyps can be removed and tissue samples taken during it. It is used to screen for colorectal cancer, generally starting at age 45 for average-risk adults, and to look for causes of bleeding or bowel changes. The client is usually given sedation.
For the nurse
The bowel must be empty: teach the clear-liquid diet and laxative prep as ordered. Afterward, the client needs a ride home because of sedation. Some gas and cramping is expected; report severe belly pain, a hard swollen belly, fever or more than a little bleeding.
