What it means
Most often used after surgery on the prostate (such as TURP) or bladder, to wash out blood and keep clots from blocking the catheter. Sterile solution, often normal saline, runs in through one channel of a three-way catheter and drains out with the urine through another. The rate is adjusted to keep the drainage light pink or clear.
For the nurse
To find the true urine output, subtract the amount of irrigation fluid used from the total drainage. If drainage stops, the client has bladder pain or the bladder feels full, check the tubing for kinks, stop the irrigation and follow orders to irrigate the catheter or notify the provider. Bladder spasms are common.
In a chart
"CBI running; output light pink, no clots. Total output 3,200 mL minus 2,500 mL irrigant = 700 mL urine."
