What it means
Immediate, focused help for someone whose usual ways of coping have been overwhelmed by an event, such as a death, an assault, a disaster or a sudden illness. It deals with the present problem only. The steps are to make sure the person is safe, assess the problem, support them, help them find coping skills and supports, and plan next steps. Most crises settle within about 4 to 6 weeks.
For the nurse
Safety comes first: ask about thoughts of harming self or others. Be direct and calm, and focus on the here and now.
