What it means
It grows from self-awareness, knowledge about other cultures and asking clients what they prefer. It affects how clients talk about illness, food, pain, family roles, modesty and death. Cultural humility, a related idea, means seeing each client as the expert on their own culture.
For the nurse
Use a trained medical interpreter, not family members, ask about cultural and religious preferences rather than assuming, and include them in the plan of care.
