decaffeinated

With most of the caffeine removed, as in decaffeinated coffee or tea.

dee-KAF-ih-nay-ted adjective

What it means

Decaffeinated drinks still contain a small amount of caffeine. Clients may be told to limit caffeine in pregnancy, with heart palpitations, anxiety, trouble sleeping, reflux or overactive bladder, and decaffeinated drinks are a common swap.

For the nurse

Before a drug-based cardiac stress test, clients are usually told to avoid all caffeine, including decaffeinated coffee and tea, for the time the test center sets, because caffeine blocks the test drug.
