dental caries

Tooth decay: damage to the hard outer layers of a tooth that forms holes (cavities).

DEN-tul KAIR-eez noun

What it means

Decay of the teeth. Bacteria in plaque, mainly Streptococcus mutans, feed on sugars and make acid that dissolves the tooth enamel. Without treatment the hole deepens and can reach the nerve, causing pain and infection. In small children, decay of the front teeth from frequent bottles of milk or juice is called early childhood caries. Fluoride, brushing, flossing, less sugar and regular dental care help prevent it.

For the nurse

Teach parents not to put a baby to bed with a bottle of milk or juice, and to start cleaning teeth as soon as the first one appears. Check the mouth of clients who cannot do their own oral care.
