Word parts

What it means

False teeth on a plate that fits over the gums. A full denture replaces all the teeth in one jaw; a partial denture fills gaps and clips onto natural teeth. Poorly fitting dentures can cause sore gums, trouble chewing and poor nutrition.

For the nurse

Handle dentures over a sink lined with a towel or filled with water so they do not break if dropped. Brush them, store them in a labeled cup in water or soaking solution, and look at the gums for sores. Dentures are usually removed before surgery and kept safe with the client's belongings.

In a chart

"Upper and lower dentures removed, cleaned and stored in a labeled cup at the bedside."
