What it means
A first-generation antihistamine related to diphenhydramine. It calms the balance system of the inner ear, so it is used for motion sickness and dizziness. It causes drowsiness and anticholinergic effects such as dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation and trouble passing urine.
For the nurse
For motion sickness, teach the client to take it 30 to 60 minutes before travel, not to drive and to avoid alcohol. The Beers Criteria advise avoiding first-generation antihistamines in older adults because of confusion and falls.
