donning

Putting on personal protective equipment, such as a gown, mask, eye protection and gloves.

DON-ing noun

What it means

The opposite of doffing (taking it off). The CDC sequence for donning is: gown first, then mask or respirator, then goggles or face shield, then gloves pulled over the gown cuffs. Hand hygiene is done before starting.

For the nurse

Choose the equipment for the type of precautions and the task, and fit-check a respirator each time. Doffing is the riskier step, done in a set order to avoid contaminating yourself.

Remember it

Donning goes from the bottom up and gloves last: gown, mask, goggles, gloves.
