What it means
Respiratory droplets are larger particles that fall to the ground within about 1 to 2 meters (3 to 6 feet) instead of floating in the air. Germs that spread this way include influenza, pertussis (whooping cough), mumps, rubella and some types of meningitis. Smaller particles that stay in the air and travel farther spread by the airborne route instead. Droplet precautions are the steps used to stop this kind of spread.
For the nurse
For droplet precautions, put the client in a private room when possible, put on a surgical mask on entering the room, and have the client wear a mask when leaving the room. Teach everyone to cover coughs and sneezes.
