What it means
Skin becomes dry when its outer layer loses water and natural oils. It is very common in older adults, in cold or dry air, with frequent hot baths and harsh soaps, and with dehydration, low thyroid, diabetes and kidney disease. Dry skin itches, cracks easily and lets germs in.
For the nurse
Use warm, not hot, water and mild soap, pat the skin dry and put on moisturizer while the skin is still damp. Older adults often do not need a full bath every day. Dry, cracked skin on the feet of a client with diabetes needs close watching for breaks.
