What it means
It includes physical abuse, emotional or psychological abuse, sexual abuse, neglect (not giving needed food, care, medicines or safety), abandonment and financial abuse (taking money or property). Older adults with dementia, frailty or isolation are at greatest risk. Many cases are never reported.
For the nurse
Watch for unexplained bruises or injuries, injuries at different stages of healing, poor hygiene, weight loss, pressure injuries, fear of a caregiver, or a caregiver who will not leave the client alone. Interview the client alone. Nurses are mandated reporters in most US states: report suspected abuse to Adult Protective Services as your state requires.
