What it means
A common lab technique. A sample is added to a plate coated with an antigen or antibody; if the target is present it sticks, and an enzyme then makes a color whose strength shows how much is there. ELISA-type tests are used to screen for infections such as HIV and hepatitis, and to measure hormones and drug levels. A positive screening result is usually confirmed with a different test.
