endometrium

The inner lining of the uterus, which thickens each month and is shed as the menstrual period if no pregnancy begins.

en-doh-MEE-tree-um noun

Word parts

endo- withinmetr/o uterus-ium tissue

What it means

Hormones make the endometrium build up each cycle, ready for a fertilized egg to implant. If pregnancy does not happen, the lining breaks down and leaves the body as the menstrual flow. Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue like it grows outside the uterus, and endometrial cancer starts in this lining.
