What it means

Wetting in a child aged about 5 or older. Nocturnal enuresis (bed-wetting at night) is the most common kind and often runs in families. It usually goes away with time. Treatment can include a bed-wetting alarm, limiting drinks in the evening, voiding before bed and sometimes medicine such as desmopressin. New wetting in a child who was dry may point to a urinary infection, diabetes, constipation or stress.

For the nurse

Teach parents that the child is not wetting on purpose: never punish or shame, and praise dry nights.
