What it means
An ergot alkaloid used under the tongue, or with caffeine (Cafergot), to abort a headache. It narrows blood vessels throughout the body, so too much can cut off blood flow to the hands, feet and other organs (ergotism). Taking it with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors, such as some antibiotics and HIV drugs, can cause dangerous loss of blood flow.
For the nurse
Teach the client to take it at the first sign of the headache, not to exceed the weekly limit, and to report cold, numb or painful fingers or toes and chest pain. It is not used in pregnancy, coronary artery disease or uncontrolled high blood pressure.
