What it means
Also called financial exploitation. It is a common form of elder abuse and can also happen to adults with disabilities. Examples include stealing money, misusing a bank card, forcing someone to sign a will or deed, or a caregiver spending a client's money on themselves. The person doing it is often a family member or trusted caregiver.
For the nurse
Warning signs include unpaid bills or loss of utilities despite enough income, sudden changes to a will or bank account, missing belongings, and a caregiver who controls all money and will not let the client speak alone. Report suspected abuse as required by state law, often to Adult Protective Services.
